Reduce your stresses by floating!

We know that we have learned to let go of our stress in the mind, but now you can let go of the physical stresses with a trip to the floatation tank.

Sensory deprivation tanks developed by John Lilly in the 1950s were created to examine what happens to the mind when all external stimuli are removed.

The results showed an increase in “theta” waves, the brain activity associated with sleep and deep relaxation. These tanks are found in wellness centers and spas around the world.

The tanks themselves are 8x4 foot sound and sight-proof rectangular containers filled with about ten inches of body temperature water holding 800-1000 pounds of concentrated Epsom salts and minerals. The salt mixture creates buoyancy making everything rise to the surface. Once you get use to the water and trust the environment to keep you afloat, you feel weightless. Some tank centers offer piped in music, but the best way to experience a float is without sensory input. You will find that floating takes your mind to new levels and deeper meditative places.

And then there was light!

As the days grow shorter and the morning light more dim, it’s easy for the winter blues to set in. Called seasonal affective disorder (SAD), this mild form of depression is the direct result of less exposure to sunlight. Scientists believe these shorter hours prompt the brain to decrease production of serotonin, the mood-regulating neurotransmitter, while it increases the sleep-related hormone melatonin an effective recipe for depression.

While many can preserve until spring returns, others are getting a winter boost with light therapy. Using full spectrum fluorescent tubes that mimic natural sunlight, additional hours of daylight can illuminate your home or workplace. Even without therapeutic fixtures, SAD can be alleviated by repositioning workstations to optimize exposure to natural light, as well as by engaging in regular exercise, preferably done outdoors.

Warning: Generosity and Cooperation may be habit forming!

A new study at Emory University in Atlanta has shown that the choice to cooperate, trust, and be generous with others may have more to do with the hardwiring of the brain than the goodwill of the heart. Researchers have found that the brain centers associated with pleasure are activated when people choose mutualism over greed.

This altruistic behavior releases a flood of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that stirs up feelings of euphoria and also plays a leading role in addictive behaviors. The brain’s natural feel-good circuitry reinforces kind acts with pleasurable feelings, leading us to do more and more good deeds.

Running vs. Walking
Get ready for the New Year’s Resolutions
Walking
Running
Calories
30 minutes of brisk walking at roughly 3.5MPH burns about 120 calories with a 60:40 carbohydrates to fat breakdown.

Calories
30 Minutes of running at 6 MPH fires through about 270 calories in a 75:25 ratio of carbs to fat.
Cardio
When preformed at the same rate and for the same period of time, running and walking deliver nearly identical cardiovascular benefits, provided you’re exercising within your target heart rate zone-between 60 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate (MHR). Find your MHR by subtracting your age from 220.
IMPACT
Walkers experience fewer injuries because there is less impact and therefore less joint compression.
IMPACT
It is common for avid runners to suffer knee injuries and other stress fractures as a result of repetitive impact on the joints.
