Natural Spa Review
The Homestead

Rated as one of the top 15 resort/spas by the readers of the Conde Nast Traveler Magazine, and our rating comes as no surprise of five gold leaves!

The term “take the waters” has an elegant feel at this exceptional historic spa.

When we arrived we noticed that the spa is nestled in the breathtaking Allegheny Mountains in Virginia! Even though the spa is built on the centuries-old tradition of “taking the waters,” it stands ready to bring you the most innovative of spa treatments available today in a unique historic setting.

We were shown to our rooms that had such an elegant Georgian style. Each room captured the magnificent natural beauty of the Allegheny Mountains. We were told that each wing of this National Historic Landmark was carefully decorated with a theme all it’s own.
It was very special to consider the prior visitors who had graced the premises, such as George Washington,

Robert E. Lee and Thomas Jefferson. After getting settled in our rooms, we were anxious to experience the “Jefferson Pools” that featured 40,000 gallons of constantly flowing, crystal clear natural spring water. Thomas Jefferson himself wrote to his family about the waters’ magical healing qualities in 1813. Today The Homestead House Spa mixes age old and modern-day “treatments” with the traditional spout baths that first brought the spa/resort to popularity

After getting settled in our rooms, we were anxious to experience the “Jefferson Pools” that featured 40,000 gallons of constantly flowing, crystal clear natural spring water. Thomas Jefferson himself wrote to his family about the waters’ magical healing qualities in 1813. Today The Homestead House Spa mixes age old and modern-day “treatments” with the traditional spout baths that first brought the spa/resort to popularity.

When we enjoyed the “Jefferson pools”, we were unable to compare notes until later, since they offered a separate pool for men and women. Enjoyment was the same, since the separate Ladies Pool House is fed by a separate spring, which offered the same properties as those supplied by the adjacent Gentleman’s Pool House.

After a long soak we took a moment to reflect in the beautiful setting of the grounds surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains! Special retreat areas are throughout the property to enjoy, such as the one shown with the rockers. After our journey, the pools brought about peaceful refreshment.  Our next thought was about what we were going to eat, keeping in mine the fact we were here to take good care of our health, we explored the options.

The dinning rooms were very beautiful, and the style remained elegant. During the week they offer three restaurants to cater to your needs, and on Friday and Saturday they give you one more option. All giving you the lighter fare to consider your health needs.

It is recommended that you plan your stay with at least five days in mind. Three days are just not enough, to truly enjoy this resort that offers so much. This 15,000acre resort spa offers something for the entire family. From indoor pursuits such as bowling, billiards to biking, shooting, fly-fishing, carriage rides and world famous golf! Let’s not forget our focus, that’s right “The Spa”.

They even have a new experience that they offer for families, children and groups with a new array of treatments and services designed to offer an unforgettable shared spa experience, “the spa suite”.

Well, after a good night rest, we went to the spa to experience our packages designed just for us.

We arrived about 30 minutes prior to our appointments, and were given a tour of the facility to familiarize ourselves. We both found the staff very knowledgeable and friendly. We asked for adjoining treatment suites to be able to share our experience together, and compare notes for later reporting.

They gave us robes, slippers and directed us to the locker rooms. We were offered a steam or shower before the treatments, to begin our relaxation.

For our male reviewer they choose the “Deep tissue massage”, since he was very athletic and received massage on a regular basis. They also incorporated the “ hot stone therapy” on the more stress filled areas.

On our female reviewer they suggested a Swedish massage that included Aroma therapy treatment. Since her muscles were a little sore from a tough round of golf. The therapist was able use the combination of light pressure point massage with the traditional Swedish massage to restore and refresh our lady reviewer to get the most out of the body work. The aroma therapy helped revitalize and relax her.

The next treatments of course used the natural warm waters from the “Jefferson Pools”.

Our male reviewer received “The Sportsman Soak”, this tub treatment combines the healing effects of the naturally warm waters with the invigorating properties of Dead sea salts. Our Male reviewer enjoyed the extra special treatment to his feet and back with a unique exfoliation technique. He especially appreciated this soak after he played a round of golf.

Our Lady reviewer enjoyed the “signature bath”, that combined (your choice) of salts that was created with the locally indigence fragrances of Honeysuckle, Virginia Orchard or Allegheny Raspberry mixed in their therapeutic mineral waters. Aroma Therapy, ahhhhhhh….

After the first day of treatments, we decided to check out the countryside, by horseback. They maintain a stable of over 50 horses! With over 100 miles of forest trails to choose from we were in “Ahhh!”

Our next day brought more treatments! And welcome they were, since I don’t believe either one of us had been horseback ridding in quite some time.
We both began with the mineral pools after a light breakfast. Then we headed for the spa, where our male reviewer received a “Mineral Clay Body Wrap”.
This was a perfect combination of the old tradition and technology. His treatment began with a clay body mask blended exclusively with their natural mineral waters. After allowing his body to detoxify and moisturize, the clay was rinsed off from a very relaxing Swiss shower

Our Lady reviewer received “The Seaweed Body Wrap”. The body is slathered with a detoxifying layer of seaweed, then she was enveloped in a warm wrap. (This is to allow and absorb the healing benefits of the sea.) Her treatment was also concluded with the stimulating multi-head Swiss shower.

Both finished the day’s treatments with a Luxury facial designed for their skin.

We found the experience on both levels of “Male” and Female”, exceptional! If you are a real “outdoors” kind of person, you will absolutely love this spa! This was a complete pleasure, and we highly recommend this spa to those of our viewers who enjoy the special qualities of the healing waters. And don’t forget that, this is also considered a “family spa” as well!

Thank you for joining us.

See you at the Spa!
