The Fairmont New Orleans

The Fairmont has a fantastic gift shop on the lower level on Baronne Street. You might want to visit this shop if you run short on time while in New Orleans. We found most everything you would want in the line of souvenirs, spices, and even some wonderful casual apparel. The New Orleans Fairmont

Somehow, it just would not seem right to miss a tour of the Mississippi river, it is as much a part of New Orleans' history as any landmark there.

The Fairmont arranged a dinner/jazz cruise for us on the steamboat Natchez. This was defiantly a highlight of this stay, very romantic.

It began with a carriage ride through the French Quarter. Our driver picked us up at the Fairmont and took us throughout the French Quarter, down Bourbon and Royal Streets. Our driver, a native son of N'awlins, (as they pronounce it down here) pointed to the points of interest and gave us his spin on how this place would always be his home, ...if for nothing else the food. The food is wonderful here!

What a way to end the day. A wonderful dinner aboard the Natchez and a romantic stroll back to the Fairmont, stopping by each shop on Royal street and just living life easy in the Big Easy.

Day two ...

When I was young, history seems dull. There were dates, names and places to remember none of which made a connection with me. If only, I could have experienced history the way the Fairmont and Good Old Days Tours provided for us. Tours, of the magnificent Laura and Oak Alley Plantations makes history come alive, as you stand in and around these historical structures -which seem more as portals to the past.

Two distinct and very different types of plantations. Oak Alley, a more typical Greek Revival style plantation and Laura a Creole plantation ran by a very dysfunctional family. Both tours are worth the trip to Louisianan all by themselves.

On both these tours you will learn much about the way of life on a plantation. Both plantations make significant contributions to insights of the past. The oak trees lined up in front of Oak Alley are over 350 years old. They both have in common, the Mississippi river, the most popular way of travel in those days. Many plantation owners had homes in New Orleans as well and would travel back and forth between the city and the plantation on the Mississippi.

There is so much to cover on these magnificent plantations we invite you to check them out for yourself's on side links of this page.

We were now, on our way back to the Fairmont and the city that never sleeps. Awaiting my wife, was an in-room massage from the Riverside Spa. We would like for you to take note that, New Orleans is filled with wonderful health spas. From Day spas to Specialty spas. Please check our index as we did review two more spas in depth while we were in New Orleans.

Room Service at the Fairmont

There is nothing more comfortable and relaxing than having spa services brought to your very own room.

The Fairmont scheduled the massage and then called our room to let us know that the massage therapist was here and asked to send her up.

Our female reviewer received a 90 minute combination massage in our massive suite. The massage consisted of part deep-tissue, part swedish and part relaxing.

The services received from Riverside were very good and the therapist was on time and very professional. She was even equipped with relaxation music which she brought with her to provide an even more meditative relaxing state.

You will do a lot of walking in New Orleans, if only to be able to get closer views of the shops and the various sites. The therapist provided some much needed reflexology on the hands and feet. A treat in deed for the lady of my dreams.

Riverside Spa will design special package treatment to fit the needs of their clients. Aside from in-room massage service, they have a facility within a block of the Fairmont where they provide everything from Asian spa beauty treatments to Citrus aroma therapy massage and mandarin salt glow with the use of fresh oranges. Sound interesting? We only wish we had more time in the Big Easy. This is a place where the hospitality and pampering is as great as the food. Riverside Spa is a full featured day spa and they are worth checking out, especially if you are staying at the Fairmont, as they very close to the hotel and are open seven days a week.

Some of the other items we would love to try the next time here is their Hot Stone Massage treatment and their facial packages. They have a variety of Getaway Packages, we are sure, one of them is just right for you. Check out their web site for a full list of what they have available.

Fully relaxed, and ready for the pièce de résistance. The food!

It was time to go to Sazerac's for cocktails and then to dinner.

All the time, you are in New Orleans you do not mind the walking and all the exercise you get in. The sights and sounds stir you, and keep you moving -on to the next great site or event.

There is an added benefit to the exercise you receive and that is there is no guilt when you eat the excellent food there. Most people say they eat to live! In New Orleans they say, "We live to eat!"

The French, Creole, Cajun and Italian restaurants are to die for. The fact that Louisiana is on the Mississippi and close to the Gulf only ads to the chefs supplies, which he has to offer.

We love the native dishes and there is no better place to experience this than at Sazerac's.
