You will know that you are
in Thailand when you arrive in Amanpuri. Most of what has been
built here has been created out of local materials made by local
craftspeople.
In Sanskrit Amanpuri means “place of peace. It truly is a
haven from the fast-paced world many of us live in. The main roof
of the Grand Sala, the centerpiece of Amanpuri, soaring 40 feet
high. Upon our arrival a manager was assigned to look after each
of us during our entire stay.
The former coconut plantation has been built on
three levels into the trees and tropical foliage. Forty pavilions
are spread out over twenty acres. The pavilions stand on stilts
linked by elevated walkways.
We found a well-equipped gym with treatment rooms for massages,
facials, and other soothing delights. Our rooms were quietly elegant.
The décor seduces you with the beautiful creamy, white walls;
floor-to-ceiling decorative wood panels; carved furniture; as well
as beautiful soft fabrics. Our bathrooms were enormous, designed
for two. We had a glorious ocean view, although most rooms have
a dense palm grove view. The Amanpuri was built with the respect
of the land in mind.
Set in a coconut grove sloping gently down to
the Andaman Sea, the spa advocates a ‘lifestyle’ approach
to wellness. This, indeed, is the focal point of the Aman program.
Individualized assessment is followed by soothing meditation,
body-limbering yoga and an extensive selection of treatments.
They also offered scrubs, wraps, herbal lotions, pedicures, facials
and massage. The treatments take place in spa pavilions that
are discretely spaced throughout the shaded plantation to offer
personal space for reflection. The pavilions are available for
couples or individuals and come with steam rooms, showers, baths
and private, outdoor relaxation Salas.
The Terrace Restaurant features fresh seafood and
continental and Thai specialties daily; and surprise, there is
also an Italian restaurant where you can dine by candlelight on
the veranda overlooking the sea. Musicians serenade you as the
moon rises over the water. The service is seamless and gracious.
It’s a long way to this part of the world,
so consider seeing both Thailand and Indonesia on your journey.
No matter what your plans, you will appreciate the quality and
serenity of the Amanpuri. Once here you will have plenty of time
to unwind and soak in the tranquility and do exactly nothing
