Following our short one-hour flight from San Juan to Anguilla,
B.W.I., Malliouhana’s guest service director greeted
us and made arrangements for our ten-minute cab ride to their
property.
Malliouhana is located on the Northwestern coastline on a twenty-five
acre bluff overlooking two spectacular beaches. The lush landscape
gardens and two mile white sand beach and azure blue water of Meads
Bay painted a very romantic backdrop for this extraordinary environment.
Before the creation of the Malliouhana, a British industrialist
and well-traveled bon vivant Leon Roydon and his late wife, Lyane,
had created their dream of building a Caribbean resort with the
standards of that which they were accustomed to while they traveled
in Europe. Like many others, the Roydons fell in love with Anguilla.
Since the opening in 1982, this resort has won rave reviews including
top awards from Conde’ Naste and Wine Spectator, for its
extraordinary interiors, style, refinement, gourmet cuisine, and
attention to detail.
Malliouhana clearly understands the needs of its
discerning guests. They offer a staff-to-guest ratio of more than two to one, which
affords a high level of service. The warmth of the Anguillan staff
and the meticulous care of Leon Roydon and his son Nigel creates
a gracious atmosphere. Leon who welcomed us to the Malliouhana
arranged for a tour of their new eight-month-old spa.
This 15,000-square-foot ocean front spa offers
therapeutic and specialty massages, body treatments, skin care,
hair care, and
a fully equipped fitness center. This luxurious spa welcomes
all island visitors and local residents. The spa menu is very
extensive
and many of the body treatments used include the indigenous flowers
and plants on the island. We scheduled our appointments and chose
the “couples suite” so that we could allow our readers
to learn about a very unique characteristic of this gorgeous facility.
Our treatments were scheduled to include a lunch half-way thru
our four hour stay in the couples’s suite.
Next, we were off to enjoy the delicious cuisine at “Le
Bistro” restaurant located poolside next to Meads Bay beach
located on the beach. We found the menu and quality of the food
excellent.
This daytime restaurant serves lunch, snacks and afternoon tea
and is open to all hotel guests and island visitors. A wonderful
variety of menu items will help curb the appetite after bobbing
in the surf at Meads Bay.
After a wonderful lunch it was time to enjoy our
first treatment here at their new spa. The selection for massage
was quite extensive. This included the traditional therapeutic
style that could be tailored to meet your individual needs for
deep tissue, or sports.
Dinner offered a magical feel as you
were able to enjoy the “open
air” unrestricted view of the sunset over the ocean. The
dining experience at Malliouhana is recognized as being one of
the finest in the Caribbean for its gourmet cuisine, elegant
atmosphere and award-winning wine list.
Hotel guests and island visitors delight in the tantalizing
cuisine of the French menu infused with Caribbean flavour while
gazing
out over a star-filled sky in the open air Main House Restaurant
or enjoying a tasty lunch in a casual poolside setting at the beach
side cafe - Le Bistro overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
Hotel guests can also choose an intimate feast for two from the
privacy of their room under their covered outdoor terrace.
Breakfast was an equally wonderful treat at this outstanding outdoor
location. The food as well as service was exceptional. After breakfast
it was time to prepare for the special menu of services selected
in their spa suite.
The treatments that were
tried were:
Stone Therapy - a deep comforting and balancing
treatment that uses warm basalt stones in rhythmic gliding strokes
to induce
a contemplative state of relaxation. Cooling stones are applied
at the end of the treatment to refresh both mind and body and
to help tone skin and muscle tissues.
Anti-ageing Lift Defense Treatment -
A precision treatment that targets the visible signs of ageing
with an innovative scientific
formula that reduces visible wrinkles, firms and lifts facial
contours, reinforces skin’s resistance and prevents the
appearance of new wrinkles. Application of a triple-action-firming
mask is combined with precise, digital massage for optimum hydration
and protection. Particular attention to the contour of the eyes promotes
elasticity and cellular renewal for a visibly effective reduction
of puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles.
Sea Surge and Soak - A calming bath that balances
the nervous system, this blend is recommended to counter the
ill effects
of overexertion, nervous disorders and stress. Extracts from
orange, valerian, cat mint and chamomile are added to produce
a relaxing state of mind and body.
French ‘Gommage’ Body Polish -
An invigorating full body exfoliation that eliminates dead skin
cells
and prepares the
skin to absorb active plant extracts and nourishing, protective
emollients. The body ‘gommage’ is applied and gently
massaged to remove dead skin then rinsed thoroughly with specialty
showers for a smooth, luminous appearance. The treatment is completed
with light effleurage using a hydrating lotion with oil extracts
that regulate skin permeability for optimum protection.
Half way through the treatments a healthy and very tasty lunch
was presented along with champagne.
When all the treatments were completed it was time to go to the
hair salon to renew the hair’s appearance from the treatments.
The
salon is very intimate and you feel as if you feel quite catered
to. The products used are top of the line!
Once again it was time to go to dinner, but this time the
location selected was at the Cusinart Resort off premise. As
you enter the
restaurant you get the feel of a very lively atmosphere, and
the cuisine is most definitely “Italian”. The wait
staff was very friendly and the evening was most memorable.
We shall return to write a special feature in the future at
this location since this is one of three top-notch locations
on the
island of Anguilla.
The next morning we had our final breakfast at the restaurant
overlooking Meads Bay and the water was summoning us!
This is by far the best location
for snorkeling. With so much to see in the calm water, two
hours went by so quickly! When can we return? We miss it already.
