The Hotel Del Coronado

has been celebrating the holidays in grand tradition since 1888. Famous for its elegant surroundings and lavish service, The Del is also known for its festive holiday traditions. It was here in 1904, that America was favored with the first electrically lit outdoor Christmas tree, setting the stage for a century of holiday enchantment. Today that tradition of festive elegance continues. This year's holiday theme, A Wish for Peace, reminds us of the true spirit of the holidays.

Upon our arrival at the Del we were escorted to our rooms which were incredibility appointed and included a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean.

After unpacking, we enjoyed the “Royal High Tea”. The “Victorian Tea” served in the Palm Court included gourmet accompaniments such as Almond Dusted Caramelized Asian Pear, Smoked Sturgeon, Cured Duck Roulette, Curried Egg Salad, Cucumber and Radish Sprout, House Smoked Salmon, Belgian Truffles and Chocolate-dipped Strawberries.
As we enjoyed our tea we were serenaded by live piano music. What an elegant way to enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

After our tea, we went for a walk to familiarize ourselves with the beautiful hotel and its surroundings. Our first stop was the newly renovated Spa and Fitness Center which overlooks the tranquil Pacific Ocean. This Spa features state-of-the-art Cybex weight training equipment, Trotter and Tectrix treadmills, bicycles and Stairmasters. The men's and women's locker rooms feature private showers, steam bath and whirlpool. We were told that the spa will be expanded in the next year and a half, so we will be enlisted with the chore of visiting again upon it’s completion Poor Us!

We enjoyed a quick work out before our extraordinary dinner at the Prince of Wales Restaurant.
The cuisine and presentation was beyond our expectations. Our server Jill was exceptional. We were able to enjoy many of The Prince of Wales signature dishes along with wine pairing with each of the selections. Below are the dishes that we experienced:

Wine Amuse Bouche
Chilled marinated tiger prawns set on eggplant caviar with chive oil

First Course
Duo of Foie Gras
Hudson Valley Duck Foie Gras Napoleon, duck foie gras layered with Granny Smith Apples and Smoked Sturgeon.
French Goose Torchon, goose foie gras poached then chilled, set with frisee salad and a port wine reduction

Wine Pairing: 2000 Grgich Hills Late Harvest Riesling "Violetta", Napa Valley

Second Course
Baby Greens Salad (Lola Rossa, Romaine, Red Oak)
Tossed with a sherry vinaigrette (shallots and olive oil, salt and pepper) Escabeche vegetables (olives, tomatoes, shallots, turnips, beets, onions, crimini mushrooms, chanterelle mushrooms) garnished with a walnut bread crisp topped with tapenade (Spanish olive paste)

Wine Pairing: 2000 Honig Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley

Third Course
Crispy Skin Hawaiian Red Snapper set on a parsnip puree with wild mushrooms salsify, cipollini onions, lobster claws, and a Parsley Lemon Fish-fume finished with an oyster. Mr. Roberts' (who was lactose intolerant) snapper was set with fingerling potatoes instead of parsnip puree and finished with a cinnamon and anise infused chicken jus.

Wine Pairing: 1999 Stonestreet Chardonnay, Sonoma County

Fourth Course
Roasted Muscovy Duck Breast set with Port Braised short ribs wrapped in a crispy filo pastry topped with a braised endive accompanied with a fricassee of root vegetables (yams rutabaga, and celery root) and finished with a truffle infused duck jus.
Wine Pairing: 2000 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Dessert
Warmed Praline Fondant set with stone fruits
(Apricots, pears, and peaches) marinated in armanac topped with homemade vanilla bean ice cream.

Pairing: 1983 Ramos Pinto Porto, Portugal

This was the most exceptional fine dinning experience ever!

The next day we enjoyed another workout at their fitness center prior to our treatments.
Our male reviewer enjoyed the “Serenity”. This was a 25 minute refreshing body polish, and a 50 minute deep Swedish massage.
Our female reviewer enjoyed the “Balance” This was a 25 minute Body Polish or Salt and Sea Glow, with a 50 minute massage with a peppermint foot or eye zone treatment. She opted for the eye treatment which was completely enjoyable!
Both of the review team felt that the staff was both knowledgeable and exceptionally skilled.

That evening the review team experienced the award-winning Lamb's Players Theatre.
The Del offers their annual production of “An American Christmas”. This 2-½ hour performance includes stories, songs; dance and holiday cheer from the turn-of-the-century. Fourteen cast members portray the Marshall’s, a typical American family in the early 1900s. This charming production includes hors d'oeuvres and a traditional four-course yuletide dinner prepared by The Del's master chefs. Returning this year, the Lamb's Players are pleased to present a matinee offering called Aunt Agatha's Christmas Tea. This special engagement includes a three-course Christmas tea hosted by the irrepressible Aunt Agatha and is offered December 21 and December 22 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.Our staff did not enjoy this special event, but they are certain to feel confident to recommend it to the viewers based on the experience of the production they experienced.

We highly recommend spending the Christmas holidays at the Del. We felt as though we were transported back in time to a less complicated world and one filled with the kind of tradition and festivities that have been depicted in some of our time honored movie classics. Perhaps the Del is a place to start a family tradition of your own.

Thank you for joining us.

See you at the Spa!
